5 out of 5 stars Dorman Upper Intake Manifold   November 17, 2009

Installed the upper intake manifold kit in a 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight which was experiencing coolant loss. The old upper intake manifold (plenum) had started to melt around the original EGR tube, causing a gasket failure and a slow leak of coolant into the engine. The Dorman kit came with all the parts necessary to completely replace the upper intake manifold, including all the gaskets needed and a new reduced diameter EGR tube designed to stop (or at least delay) the melting that caused the problem in the first place. The kit includes torque specs and minimal installation instructions...look around online for more detailed directions if you're not familiar with how it's done. If you're automobile literate it's not that hard of a job. More in depth than some might be willing to undertake, but if you have the confidence and motivation to see the job through to the end, it's manageable as a DIY afternoon project. Depending on skill level it could take anywhere from 2-6 hours to disassemble and install the new part. A good number of parts have to come out of the engine compartment (or at least be moved out of the way) before you can take the old intake manifold out and install the new one.

The only "specialty" tool you'll probably need to get a hold of for the install will be a torque wrench that can be adjusted for inch pounds (NOT food pounds)...be sure to follow the included torque directions carefully upon install. You run the risk of cracking the plastic or not getting a good seal from the gasket if you improperly torque the bolts or install them in the wrong order.

Amazon's price is by far the best I've been able to find. A trustworthy supplier, and they offer free shipping because the part is over $25. If you install this kit (properly) yourself you will be saving hundreds of dollars. There might be better kits out there that offer premium features, but the car I installed this in isn't worth more than a few thousand dollars anyway. The Dorman kit is adequate for most people's uses, includes all the necessary parts, and the price is hard to beat.

5 out of 5 stars Use ALL the parts...they're not kidding...   April 26, 2009

OK, full disclosure here: I used to work for a GM dealer and have seen MANY of this type of intake installed. At the dealership, we had all the parts on hand (GM doesn't have a 'package' they use for the warranty work, you replace what is messed up and thats all), but the Dorman intake has all the 'extras' that allow you to do the FULL job properly (manifold, gaskets, PCV valve, fittings, fuel injector o-rings, EGR nozzles). This job probably isn't for an inexperienced backyard mechanic, but its not that hard to do in an afternoon. Plan to do an oil change AFTER this job, just in case you get some coolant leakage into the crankcase (not VERY likely, but not that unusual, either).

Make sure you don't forget to change out the EGR nozzle that anchors into the lower intake manifold; the smaller tube allows more airflow around the nozzle, cooling it and reducing the heat exposure to the gasket between the upper and lower manifolds (main cause of failure and leakage, based on my experience). Also, while you are in there, might as well use a can of carb cleaner on the injectors and fuel rail. Clean out the back of the throttle body, the EGR tube, everything. This is a good opportunity to clean out the whole system, so take advantage of it. Don't forget to lube the o-rings with a little grease so they don't hang up and tear during installation.

All in all, a good parts kit; everything you need in one box. Not a lot as far as instructions go, but if you know what is in the box, you know where to put it.

5 out of 5 stars great price, etc   June 3, 2009

my comments are ditto to the others that have written about this same product. Saved major dollars by buying this item through Amazon instead of buying locally. It was 100% what they said it was advertised to be from Dorman's own site which stipulated what was included. Everything was included for the Dorman OE Solutions Intake Manifold 615-180. I used this on a 1997 Park Ave 3.8. Had to call to make sure it worked for my application since it said it didn't work using their website tool for cross reference.

5 out of 5 stars Very complete kit. DIY can handle the job cause I did!   December 29, 2009

I have worked on my own cars for 45 years, but am by no means an expert mechanic. In fact, I thought this job might be beyond me. However, the manufacturer has created a complete kit with adequate instructions and I was able to finish the job with no problems in about 5 hours on my 2003 Buick. I did get hold of a Buick shop manual and it was a substantial help, but you could probably get by without if you are patient. Also, I took about 15 photos before I started the job and a few more as I progressed and I was sure glad I had them when it was time to reassemble things. Just made it easy to put all the wires and pipes back in the right place in the right order. One problem, the job calls for an inch-pound torque wrench which I discovered is very expensive to buy and not available to rent. I could have guessed at the torques and it would have been okay, but I rigged up a postal scale with my 3/8 socket drive so that I could apply 89 inch-pounds of torque to the manifold bolts reasonably accurately. GO FOR IT!
